The Younger star posted vacation pictures on Instagram before the burglary happened. Her son, Luca, was also traveling with her. According to some reports, the criminal knew the home was empty at the time because of Duff’s posts. The burglar broke through a door and looked through the house without setting off an alarm.
“This is a scary and upsetting situation for anyone to go through but Hilary is thankful that her family, her staff, her home and her pets are all safe. That said, she has a significant security team in place that will work with the authorities on this incident and handle security measures moving forward,” the actress’ rep told Us Weekly.
The police believe a gang is behind the burglary
Duff may be the latest celebrity to have her home burglarized, but robbers took $150,000 worth of jewelry from Emmy Rossum and $2 million worth of jewelry from Alanis Morissette. Burglars have also hit the homes of Nick Young, Yasiel Puig, and Nicki Minaj. According to NY Daily News, the LAPD believes members of the Crips could be behind the string of crimes.
The group allegedly targets empty homes with luxury jewelry inside. They then knock on the front door and if no one answers, break in to take the valuables. The police also claim the members wear button-down shirts and enter the wealthy enclaves in luxury sedans in order to blend in.
So why celebrities? Well, the police believe that the burglars aren’t targeting celebrities, but target expensive homes and jewelry, which have just so happened to belong to some Los Angeles stars.
